Prelims of Engineering Services Examination ESE 2017 is going to be held on 8-Jan-2017 as per the examination notification from UPSC. Every year UPSC conducts ESE examination under Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering discipline.

ESE 2017 Plan of Examination
The examination shall be conducted according to the following plan :—
Stage-I: Engineering Services (Preliminary/Stage-I) Examination (Objective Type Papers)
Stage I will complete in 1 (one) day only
(a) General Studies and Engineering Aptitude- 2hrs- 200 marks paper.
(b) Engineering Discipline Specific Paper- 3hrs- 300 marks.
Stage-II: Engineering Services (Mains/Stage-II) Examination (Conventional Type Papers)
Stage II : Comprise of two papers.
Engineering Branch Specific Paper I – 3hrs – 300 marks
Engineering Branch Specific Paper I I- 3hrs – 300 marks
Stage-III : Personality Test (200 Marks)
ESE 2017 Stage (I+II+III) = 1300 marks

General Studies and Engineering Aptitude (Preliminary Examination/Stage-I, Paper I, Objective type, Common to all Candidates)
1. Current issues of national and international importance relating to social, economic and industrial development 2. Engineering Aptitude covering Logical reasoning and Analytical ability
3. Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Analysis
4. General Principles of Design, Drawing, Importance of Safety
5. Standards and Quality practices in production, construction, maintenance and services
6. Basics of Energy and Environment: Conservation, environmental pollution and degradation, Climate Change, Environmental impact assessment
7. Basics of Project Management
8. Basics of Material Science and Engineering
9. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) based tools and their applications in Engineering such as networking, e-governance and technology based education.
10. Ethics and values in Engineering profession.
Note: The paper in General Studies and Engineering Aptitude will include Knowledge of relevant topics as may be expected from an engineering graduate, without special study. Questions from all the 10 topics mentioned above shall be set. Marks for each Topic may range from 5% to 15% of the total marks in the paper.

ESE 2017 Eligibility
candidate must be either:
(a) a citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Nepal, or
(c) a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently setting in India. Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India. A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him/her by the Government of India.
(b) Age Limits: 21 years – 30 years of age
(c) ESE 2017 Minimum Educational Qualification:
(i) obtained a degree in Engineering from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956; or
(ii) passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India); or
(iii) obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University/College/Institution and under such
conditions as may be recognised by the Government for the purpose from time to time, or
(iv) passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India); or
(v) passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India; or
(vi) passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November, 1959 Provided that a candidate for the post of Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts) and Indian Radio Regulatory Service Gr ‘A’ may possess any of the above qualifications or the qualification mentioned below namely:‐
M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.
